CONFIRMATION SPONSORS

As an important part of our Catholic faith the sponsor is responsible for assisting the child and his/her parents on their journey towards heaven. Because of this sponsors are held to the highest standard. Each sponsor is required to meet the following qualifications according to canon law:

  1. At least 16 years of age
  2. Not the natural or adoptive parents of the baptized child
  3. Fully initiated Roman Catholic (has received the sacraments of baptism, first holy communion, and confirmation)
  4. If married, validly married in the Catholic Church; if not married (single), they must be living in accord with the church's teachings
  5. Actively practicing Catholic, in communion with the Catholic Church; striving to live a life in harmony with its teachings on faith.

Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the "sacraments of Christian initiation," whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For "by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. (CCC1285)
